Drama Department

Westmount Collegiate's Drama programs offer students hands-on experience in acting, directing, and stage production through collaborative projects and in-class performances. Students explore a variety of dramatic styles, while developing their critical thinking, creativity and collaboration skills. Each program fosters confidence, teamwork, and artistic expression both on stage and behind the scenes.

Open Drama (Grades 9- 12)

These courses provide opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of sources and cultures that are responsive to the unique identities of the students within each class. Students will use the elements of drama to examine situations and issues that are relevant to their lives. Students will also use the Creative Process to create, perform, discuss, and analyse dramatic works, and then reflect on their experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them. Students perform in a variety of styles, genres and mediums in the state of the art studio classrooms available at Westmount Collegiate. Open to all students registered at WCI.

Arts West Drama (Grade 9-12)

The Arts West Drama program at Westmount Collegiate is an audition-based specialty program for students passionate about theatrical performance. This program is for all those who love drama!  It allows students to explore all aspects of theatre in a safe and creative place.  Students receive instruction in everything from basic acting skills, personal expression and communication, to performances in musical and nonmusical theatre. Along the way they receive professional instruction in all the skills of the actor including film acting, singing, improvisation, modern and classical text, movement, mask, clowning, and so much more!  This program will leave students with lasting memories of their high school experience and skills to last them a life time regardless of the profession they choose. 

The Arts West Drama program also offers rich experiential learning through field trips to leading Canadian theatre institutions such as the Stratford Festival, Mirvish, Theatre Passe Muraille, Tarragon Theatre, Factory Theatre, Canadian Stage, Crow’s Theatre, and more. In the classroom, students work alongside Guest Artists with specialized training and experience in the performing arts industry, providing invaluable opportunities for students to develop their performance skillset alongside industry professionals.
